Video: Managing a Meltdown
I think it’s important to help people understand some of what families like mine go through. This meltdown in particular was very, very mild. However, I thought it may help someone to see how we managed it. It’s important to note that I have to handle Gavin’s meltdowns in a……..certain way, otherwise he will escalate. We have found that this type of approach works best to bring him back from these meltdowns. Your milage may very but I just want to demonstrate what I do to manage these situations.
Gavin, got himself under control rather quickly. So my hats off to him on this one. It may sound weird to some but he really did control himself well here.

How do you manage Meltdowns?
This is one of the hardest things to deal with. You have to be able to control this in the future. I think this is so important.

That is wonderful to see that at such a tense situation, both child and parent was able to manage themselves with such effort.
I was wondering what triggered the meltdown? Being a behavior analyst myself, I always look at the antecedents and conduct a thorough functional analysis when approaching such types of behavior. Hats off to dad! Thanks for the share!
thanks for sharing this- we haven’t tried the “pretzel” thing and I think we will. Great idea. My 9 year old with Autism gets violent when he throws his fits and currently we make him sit on his bed.
