Build an Olaf Sensory Bag For Therapy Fun!
Do you want to build a snowman? It doesn’t have to be a snowman! Every small child as well as adult knows the words to that song. It’s one of my favorites from the movie, Frozen. My native Floridian children have sadly never built a snowman. This sensory bag is as close as they have ever gotten to building anything remotely close to a snowman.
Sensory bags are good to build fine motor skills as well as work on hand strength. For my high anxiety child, it helps to center and calm her. It really helps to take her focus off her anxiety which lowers her level. She’s not even my child with autism. Sensory bags have so many autism and non autism uses. Plus they are super easy to make in addition to being affordable. Any therapy item that’s easy to make as well as frugal is a winner in my book. Let’s make one of our favorite snowman, shall we?
Materials:
- White shaving cream
- Black craft foam
- Orange craft foam
- 1 gallon Ziploc bags
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Packing tape
Instructions:
Begin by cutting an Olaf face out of black and orange craft foam. Cut two circles for the eyes, two eyebrows and one mouth out of the black craft foam. Leave a gap in the top of the mouth for the white shaving cream to show through, this will make it look like Olaf’s teeth. Cut out a triangular carrot shaped nose with rounded edges from the orange craft foam. You can view the photo for an idea of what the face should look like.
Open a Ziploc bag and fill it at least half full with white shaving cream.
Place the foam face pieces into the Ziploc bag with the shaving cream.
Try to get as much air as possible out of the Ziploc bag and close it tightly.
Use a strip of packing tape to secure the top of the closed Ziploc bag and prevent leaks.
Have your little one push around the foam pieces to build Olaf’s face for sensory play!
That’s it. Easy peasy. Best part is that if something happens to the bag you have the ingredients to make another. Better yet, you can make several for all the little people in your life and share the love!
