On the Spectrum #95: The Wonder-Jake!
I had a lot of fun drawing this. : )
Hopefully I’m not dating myself too much with this one. I assume most people with grade-school aged kids remember the Super-Friends growing up, right? And the Wonder-Twins, Zann and Jaina? Well, if not, you can Google it. ; )
In any case, Jacob has a tendency to go into what we call “puddle mode,” usually when when we’re walking in a public places, parking lots, malls, etc… Very frustrating, and sometimes not very safe. Anyone else get this sort of thing?

I am an autistic adult and this cartoon and the descriptions of this behavior in the comments that follow it make so much sense to me that I can’t believe that Scott, ZombieMom and tara don’t see it.
The “hamster dishrag puddle slide” is happens because the child knows that when the adult’s hand is holding something, the adult is in control of whatever his hand is attached to. So Puddle Mode, is really Wagon Mode: “I am the wagon, you are supposed to pull me and I am just making it as easy as possible for you to do so”.
Yes! We use to say it was like picking up a a dish rag. My almost 3 year old, Jake, has perfected it! It makes me think of the move they teach in self-defense class. This is definitely going up on the fridge!
Oh my gosh, yes! When my children were younger, there were times when we’d have to drag them to get them out of the road, from parking lot to sidewalk, etc. I call that glorious melt they did ‘the hamster slide’. Hamsters will go all boneless when they’re ready to not be held any longer and will slide right out of your hands.
