You know your child has Autism when…
You know your child has Autism, which often encompasses a side order of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) when…
He falls asleep on the couch at 8:30, long before bedtime. When you transfer him to bed he wakes for a second and asks,
“whatcha doin mom?”
Knowing that he needs the bed routine to go a certain way you begin to sing the song that must be sung every night,
“You are my sunshine, my only…”
But you are cut off by the snoring. So you say phew and sneak out, happy to get one night away from the sunshine.
Then, at 3 AM, after being asleep for over 5 hours, he bursts into your room and screams,
“I THOUGHT WE HAD TO SING THE SONG!!!”
Unbelievable.
@muggitmouse – I hate those nights. We have those when my son is even the slightest bit sick. He is miserable and will not sleep. And the rest of the world doesn’t get the memo that I have had no sleep…
@letrufflepig – How cute! We had to change the words too. After his brother was born we had to sing, “you are my sunshine, you are my sunshine.” Rather than, “my ONLY sunshine.”
@musicmom60@xanga – So sorry for you. I understand. He was always a bad sleeper. He basically didn’t sleep for longer than an hour at a time until her was 9 months old, unless he was in a swing. At the time we had no idea what the problem was, but now we know it had to do with his Autism and sensory issues. He still gets up quite a bit, but is much, much better.
@quilt_cats@xanga – Oh my goodness! I could never! 2 songs and I am out!!!
@kimmystar24@xanga – I know. I smile about it now. 3 AM is just not a good time for anything.
@ZombieMom_Speaks@xanga – I laugh every time I read your comment. He is serious about his sunshine!
@kaylaya@xanga – As much as I hate Autism, I love it. It totally makes my son who he is and he is so special. There will never, ever, ever be anyone like him. One of a kind. Go for it!
@musicmom60@xanga – as I was reading this my thoughts were with you another night of frusteration not getting him to sleep and with getting up getting him back to sleep and start the process again and if that song did not work after it was finished another…another…and then something else till I fell asleep and was awoken again
Oh my gosh!!! My son’s nickname when he was younger was spud and I sang the Sunshine song to him with a slight adaptation…You are my Spudshine, my only spudshine! He still remembers that song although he no longer needs me to sing it at bedtime.
LOL that makes me smile.
At least he sleeps! My little Aspie never did.
that’s so cute! <3
You get off easy! I had to sing the entire lullabye cassette (front and back) to get my compulsive little one off to sleep : )
It may seems a little annoying when it happens, but when you read it over on a blog you can’t help but smile a little. 🙂
oh so cute :]
LOL… great kid.
Aww. <3 I’m pretty sure if I had a child it would be on the spectrum, as my dad and my husband and his dad are all Aspies. This makes me wanna have one. 🙂
@AGreatPerhaps@xanga – Absolutely! In all honesty, I love it. As tired as I was and perpetually am because of this kid, I wouldn’t change a thing!!
Aw, that’s an adorable story, though. Might have seemed slightly annoying at the time, but I don’t see how someone could read that and not smile a little.
LOL!! That little man is serious about his sunshine!
