The Desire for more Interaction

Happiness is……….HRH clobbering Her Cuteness on the head! Or picking up her dolls buggy and throwing it on the ground! I haven’t lost my mind. I am sure I am due to lose my mind but it hasn’t happened yet, I promise.

In January I wrote about the beginnings of social interaction between my youngest two children. HRH has come a long way since then.

So far, in fact, that I caught him hitting her on the head last week. Before I could even think about reacting (and then stop myself from reacting) he knelt down and tried to make eye contact with her. She didn’t look at him so he hit her on the head again. He paused, still looking at her, waiting for her to notice him.

Yesterday he picked up the little dolls buggy she was playing with and threw it on the floor, twice. Again, he was trying to get her attention and she was not responding. He wanted to play with her and she was ignoring him.

Ok, now that I have calmly told you about HRH being nasty to his little sister can I just screech for joy at the fact that he is looking to interact with her? He wants to play, wants her attention. He wants to share activities with her and is getting annoyed when she doesn’t notice. Of course, the way he tries to get her attention is inappropriate but we can work on an appropriate way.

Let’s be fair here, he only has a few words and does not know how to get her attention by verbal means. This doesn’t excuse him, of course, but he is doing his best in the only way he knows how to, so now it is up to us to teach him a better way.

The pair of them are doing exceptionally well together though. They were apart for a few days earlier in the month and HRH missed her terribly. He wandered around the house saying ‘sith sith’. He now spends a lot of time giving her hugs, randomly and without prompting. She does the same as she missed him too. Being apart for a few days has given them a greater appreciation of each other and been a catalyst for HRH to interact more with her.

How long will that last??!!

I wonder what she learned from feeling her brother hit her on the head and from seeing her mother notice someone hitting her on the head but refusing to react…
