Aspies don’t get many invitations
Parents of kids with Asperger’s know their kids get very few if any, invitations to come over. My Aspies are no exception to this rule.
Mike, age 17, has gotten an invitation to go with his brothers to their friend’s vacation house 10 hours’ drive away. They will stay for a week. I still can’t get over it. The friend specifically invited him along with his “neurotypical” brothers.
We explained to Mike that he can’t be his normal inflexible self. He has to go and hang out with the guys in the rowboat or on the bicycles, hardly his preferred activities. Does he really want to go?
I think he realizes how special this is. He wants to go.
What a long way he has come in just 2 1/2 years!

What if you’re just an anti-social hermit?
I used to make myself go on youth group retreats and stuff, even though for all intents and purposes I hated most of it. The few things about them that I did enjoy made up for the things that made me uncomfortable.
Even if he does not like those activities, he definitely should go! It would be a great social experience for him. And the fact that he is excited about it, gives you a clue that he is ready to make this step. Good for Mike!

Sounds a bit suspicious to me. I hope Mike’s brothers will be watching out for him.
How fantastic, it sounds like a great opportunity. My youngest son, Brandon is thirty-seven he has Asperger’s intractable epilepsy, and severe learning disorders. His older brother Matt tried to include Brandon whenever he could as they were growing up. What really surprised me was Matt’s friends they always included Brandon and they often still do. Your post tugged at my heart.
