Banning Children?

You know I was going to come up with something catchy and funny before I started my rant…..but forget that. It wouldn’t be real, cause all I want to do is say WHAT is wrong with people? Maybe its society, uptight single people, DINKS (dual income no kids) and btw who the F. came up with that? You are so special you have to come up with your own acronym? Don’t we all feel so special now?

But here’s the thing, banning kids from ANYWHERE it seems like now is only going to raise a generation of children who don’t know how to behave in public. That is the first thing that runs through my head, we send kids to school to learn and to experience the social atmosphere. So if they start to become banned from certain things how is that helping anyone?

Are you wondering what I’m talking about? Have you read this? Go read it…tell me what you think? It’s actually the second article that has come out more recently about children being banned. You can’t tell me that “oh that will never happen” BULLSHIT cause it’s happening RIGHT NOW!

I won’t even throw in the special needs card cause that would seem redundant. But what about those kids? The ones who will “look” like every other child but have autism. Do I have to start carrying around his IEP so I can explain that he’s not just a brat but he has a problem?

Cause here’s the thing if I use the special needs card you need to think about this. With the numbers already at 1-110, and those numbers rising and the fact that it doesn’t include all the kids who don’t have a Dx, that just means there is a whole generation of kids out there who will be banned for no reason other than society saying, “your loud, you cry and scream, you look like a spoiled brat, your parents are no good, and we don’t like you.”

Is that what we want to say to our kids? Shouldn’t we be raising a generation of kids who care about other people? This isn’t going to happen if the previous one is telling them they are hated.

So in all of this, I have one thing to say to those DINKS the ones who think they are better than families. The ones who think they have more rights cause they have more money to spend.

I have seven kids, and if I have to raise them all to be doctors or people in power, you remember my children and all the ones you choose to disregard with your want to have silence…They will be the ones caring for you, running things when YOU get old. I wouldn’t want to be the one who pissed off a generation of banned children and their parents… cause the future might just be a lil’ bleak.

  • @starcrossedloversdivine@xanga – I totally agree with you on this.

I am a “DINK” (although that’s an absolutely ridiculous term), but I do love children. I have nieces and nephews that make my world go round. We aren’t talking about every establishment banning children. You can argue that ‘we are already moving that way’, but it would not benefit most establishments to do that. They would lose more money than they would gain from the change, and as Star pointed out, businesses are all about making money. Why the hell would any parent want to pay to fly their young child in first class? Why would any family with children want to take their young children to a fancy restaurant? I have absolutely no idea why you are angry about these things. It isn’t like Walmart wants to ban you from shopping with your kid.
People pay extra money to go to have a nice dinner. They pay extra for first class.

  • @starcrossedloversdivine@xanga – Actually, if your developmentally disabled client is displaying unruly behavior in public, it is likely because they are having a problem with the environment.  Its not often my daughter displays negative behavior in a preferred environment.  I only see being removed from the environment as reinforcement of negative behavior and crippling by taking away a learning opportunity.  Furthermore, you could have made all your arguments for why banning of children is appropriate in reference to segregation.  Banning any population is disgusting.  How is singling out a certain group, no matter how distasteful they are to your experience, considered okay?  Segregation is not equal, including when it comes to children and their parents.  This is civil rights.

  • It’s a tough situation. Age restrictions are actually pretty common if you thing about bars, nightclubs etc. But again, children can’t learn to behave if they don’t have the opportunity.

  • Many of these people are childless or have raised theirs and want comfort in their reclining years. Jealousy is the least of their stupid feelings. Vengence is in their hearts along with selfishness because they either 1. Wiill NEVER have kids for a multitude of reasons, including ineptness; 2. Many parents have NOT trained their children, as they should, again ineptness and selfishness, so we have the droopy drawers crowd, and the talk when they should be silent crowd, etc, ad infinitum…. This attitude by different vendors and business people are, at best, on the fringe of this crowd of inept parents and business is bad enough that they feel they MUST cater to the attitude or lose business. Hence we parents with little ones do without, which unfortunately is real for those parents, and unalterable. I agree with @TiredSoVeryTired. Annoyance is polite phraseolgy!!  Peace with prejudice!

  • If we were raising a generation of kids who cared about each other we’d make our children behave in public or we’d go home.  I have three kids!  If I’m out by myself, I don’t want to deal with other people’s kids being brats.  Since I’m a mom of two boys, I can assure you my level of tolerance is high and if I think a random kid is a brat, it’s because they are.

Even children with some disability, need to learn to behave.  I know how hard that is as I have a sister who is disabled.  I always give kids the benefit of a doubt, because my sister “looks normal”.  But at the end of a few minutes of very bad behavior I no longer care.

However, I generally disagree with a child ban.  But I have no problem if an establishment asks unruly people (of any age!) to leave.

  • In addition to my former comment: when I bring my developmentally disabled clients out into the community, they sometimes have behaviors that are disruptive to others in their environment.  I still can understand why a business owner may choose to ask me and my client to leave their establishment, if we are disturbing other people that they serve. This is a learning experience for others as well as for my client and I. The client who I serve will, by operant conditioning, come to learn that having inappropriate or disruptive behaviors in a public place may mean that they are removed from that environment (assuming that the environment is of reinforcing nature, that is).

  • A business is private property. They have every right to restrict what customers they choose to serve. If a child is acting in an unruly manner that is disturbing other customers, the businessman must choose whether to serve one to protect his reputation as a “person who serves the community”, or to serve those he believes are worthy to redeem his services. Just as some restauranteurs choose to designate dress codes for their clientele, they should also be allowed to designate whether they choose to cater to families with young children. After all, a business has no purpose but to serve it’s own interests, rather than public need. If the latter were the case, it wouldn’t be a part of private industry at all – it would be a subsidy of the government.

  • Agreed. They’re completely selfish. However there are some parents who ruin it for all of us by ignoring their children in public places while they scream and run absolutely everywhere tearing the place apart. I mean obviously kids are going to have outbursts, but the parents have to have a plan of action in case that happens. Not just let it happen. Some parents just shouldn’t go out if they can’t handle taking care of their child.

  • I’ll I have to say is wait until some of these people have kids and have to suddenly learn how to deal with it. Or they just might be the type of parents who can afford a 24/7 baby sitter and are always out and their kids never see them…. But, I agree… how are kids suppose to learn to be in public and act adequately if they’re suddenly banned from everything… plus even going there once after they pass the age what makes people think that they would be ready then… it’s a process of adaptation to the environment. I was a single mom and had no where to leave my newborn so I would take him to dinner with my friends… I had no choice. Lucky for me he didn’t cry or get up… but we all can’t accommodate other people and if they only want us trapped at home because we can’t afford a sitter or are single parent… well we will do what we can to keep our sanity and be happy.
