S4 S11 Knowing Your Limitations: Getting Legal Help

Several years ago I received a call from an autism mom who had a major issue with her son’s school. It seemed the police got involved, and she needed some serious help.

This is what happens when you’re a part of the autism community for a while, people think you know what to do in these situations. The reality is, I’ve discovered what I don’t know.

This is where I realize that I need to be ok with knowing and expressing my limitations.  After all, I’m no lawyer, just a Dad of an autistic kid.

So, the best advice I could provide in her situation is to find a lawyer in her area.

What else can I do? What else could any other organization or individual do?

But this isn’t the first time a situation like this has happened. Other people have reached out to me asking for advice on anything from estate planning to guardianship. So with any legal issues I defer to those who are educated in that area.

All is not lost, however, as this week I chat with Michelle Babitz. She and her partner Robin have well over 30 years of experience as special ed teachers and have been on a mission in recent years to help special needs families with a great, affordable, legal resource.

I met Michelle and Robin when I attended an Autism Society of America conference many years ago in San Diego.  Her passion to share this legal resource, and to help promote autism awareness and understanding, is inspiring.

Let’s listen in…
