I Am David: A Journey to the Soul of Autism

As a parent of a 15-year-old preverbal autistic, it is a constant challenge finding professionals who understand the day to day challenges associated with raising a child on the spectrum.

Far too often we have difficulties communicating our child’s needs in a way that professionals understand.  When we find those who do listen and understand, you want to hang onto and fight for them to stay around as long as possible.  For your sake, and for the sake of your child.

Several years ago I met Michelle Babitz and Robin Trigg at the Autism Society Conference in San Diego California.  They are ardent supporters of Autisable and believe in helping autism families as much as possible.  They are an advertiser of Autisable through their efforts with Legal Shield.  At that same conference, I met David and his mother… whom I’ll share more within a moment…

But their passion for over 30 years has been in the world of special education and they have recently retired as teachers and have embarked on a book series that highlights individuals and families, with their insights as professionals in their field.

The first book in their series highlights David, who is nonverbal.  As much as we think nonverbal autistics don’t communicate, I can say as an autism dad that if we listen close enough, you don’t need to always say words to speak volumes.  David is an artist.  In fact, the cover of the book is one he designed.

After reading this first book, I can’t wait for the next one!  Michelle and Robin put into words what we as parents (and even some professionals) need to hear…

Once you get past the diagnosis, you can see the individual.

I know I needed that reminder at times.
