Reasoning on the Cause of the Autism Epidemic
Dan Olmsted is an investigative reporter who has put a lot of time into investigating theories about the causes of autism. He writes and edits a blog, Age of Autism, which is respected in the autism community.
Of course he is vilified by vaccine proponents, who are echoing what Big Pharma is saying about vaccines: more is better! More is better! Better for whom? Not for most people, when testing has been so limited and so skewed. Carefully compare what both sides are saying in this, focusing on those who are weighing the facts.
Take a look at Olmsted’s recent post where he is summarizing what he sees as the causes of the epidemic: vaccines and environmental toxin exposure, particularly to mercury. Did you know that the first eleven children ever diagnosed with autism (in the 1940s) had been exposed to mercury, or their parents had?

Ugh, give me a break. I am so tired of this vaccine BS.
I still like the study done by Michael Waldman that suggested that Autism was caused by television watching. In that sense, there is some basis to believe that there is an autism epidemic as television designed for children has become increasingly prominent. I know a lot of people don’t like that…but, it seems reasonable to me.
Age of Autism has close to zero respect among rationally minded people in the autism community. I’m surprised to see the word “reasoning” in the title of a post that frames those counter-productive, alarmist cranks in a positive light. As other commenters have already mentioned, autism is a new diagnosis and the so-called “epidemic” most likely has everything to do with significantly rising (perhaps even excessive) diagnosis.

There is no autism epidemic. What there is, is an influx of doctors who are quick to diagnose without taking a full look at our kids, and also the ability to diagnose. 100 years ago, no, probably more like 50, nobody even knew what autism was, much less how to diagnose it.
*Le sigh* The reason? The same reasons why all the kids have ADD, ADHD, or are bipolar or depressed. Parents don’t want to deal with their kids and we’re all supposed to be cookie cutter drones, and at the same time we want to have excuses for acting out or being ‘different’. Doctors and manufacturers aren’t likely to turn down the business even if they’re able to call b.s. on the whole thing. A study was done where they ‘tested’ every kid rather than just those who ‘exhibit symptoms’ and guess what… we’re almost all autistic. *gasp!*
This isn’t worth my time to research but it’s my understanding that the study that linked autism and vaccines was complete and utter bullshit and the guy admitted it later.
There is no autism epidemic. It was invented as a means to raise money. We have been here all along.
This is how we know any “reasoning” behind what’s causing it is faulty. Because it doesn’t exist!
