Mommy Quack is Back….

I don’t believe in coincidence.  There are no accidents.  I have no regrets.  Everything that has ever happened to me has happened for a reason at the moment it happened.

I once had a girlfriend that was extremely anti-technology. She had no computer at home.  She didn’t own a cell phone.  She refused a GPS.  She always insisted you needed to be able to do things without the help of all those gadgets.  She also joked about email and everyone “checking it.”  She said, “are you waiting for the email that is going to change your life?”  This was before Twitter and Facebook or even texting, so no, a email didn’t move my life forward in any way.

But a text did.

I have been very active in the Ryan Woods Autism Foundation.  I love the founder, Brenda Wilson. She is a grandmother with a vision and an action plan. I attended the gala they have in November.  I spoke at one of their parent workshops in May.  Then about a two weeks ago, I got a text from her…

B: Would you like to MC our Music Festival in September?
Me: Oh Brenda honey, this is my cell phone, not my husband…
B: No, we want you to be our MC.  You will have the crowd laughing and we won’t have to hire a D.J……
Me:  Are you sure?
B: Yes, you have the energy, good looks, and it feels so right, please say yes!
Me: Yes!

Now in less than a month I will be the mistress of ceremonies at an autism event that sometimes 1,000 people come to …..oh my what have I agreed to?

Since I’m doing this, I want to “Quack” for a while.  Over the last five years I have had a lot of people ask me my opinions on everything from the movie Rain Man to hyperbaric chambers.  I thought I would take some time to answer and reflect on how I went from a twenty-nine year old new mother with “the best baby in the world” because she played on her blanket not making a sound,  to the (almost)  thirty-seven year old mom to three children that changed my universe.

All my posts are going to lead up to the main event on September 10th in Middletown, CT. If you are in the area I encourage you to come.  Be prepared as you read-some days you might need tissues, others you may want to finish your drink before you read and spit it out laughing….

I promise I will do my best to be honest and somewhat entertaining….text me if I’m not….

I have three children: an autistic daughter and two very active little boys. Very rarely does autism affect a little girl, and I have yet to read a blog that matches my life and routine. I was a working mom until last year, when I began to work from home. I can't seem to do anything the way another SAHM would do it. I try to change a diaper and I hear a crash in the living room. I try to read a bedtime story and they want to know why the peddler didn't wake up when the monkeys stole his caps. I clean the bathroom in time for my semi-potty trained son to need it again. I somehow manage to make it to preschool, therapy, and the library with all three children but forget to buy milk. I love to write about my life, but I am a big Quack of a SAHM.

  • I am beginning to collect data for my dissertation, and I was hoping that you guys would be willing to help me. I am looking at stress and ways of coping with stress in parents of children ages 5-12 in three groups: parents of children with ASDs, parents of children with Type 1 diabetes, and parents of children with no diagnoses. My hope is to use this data as a jumping off point to create an intervention to help parents cope with stress.

If you meet the above criteria, can you please complete this survey?: https://baylor.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0GJF7ldjuBwBWEk

For those of you who don’t meet the above criteria, could you please consider forwarding the survey to any parents you know that fit the above criteria?

As an incentive, people who complete the survey can participate in a drawing for one of three $50 giftcards to Amazon.com. And people who refer others to the survey get their name added into the drawing for each person they refer

Thank you to everyone who completes a survey!
