Toilet Humour

All children seem to go through a stage where toilet / bottom jokes are the absolute funniest thing in the world.  Heidi is currently going through that phase.  We get A LOT of jokes that end in ‘bottom’ and mad laughter.During one of my op shop visits I found a brand new still in its packaging Whoopee Cushion for the princely sum of $1, so of course I made purchase.

What interested me was that Heidi still struggles with inflating the whoopee cushion so the play necessarily involves some level of team work / co-operation with her sister. Annie blows the cushion up and then they have to decide how they are going to use it. I like that, although I’m also encouraging Heidi to figure out how to inflate the whoopee cushion herself as it is a good oral motor exercise (hi, self confessed therapy mum, just doing my job here).

So far we’ve seen lots of the traditional sitting on the whoopee cushion and making fart noises, followed by gales of laughter.

The whoopee cushion has been squeezed between the girls hands and the air coming out the bladder directed to blow things over or as the kids calling it ‘farting it over’.

There is the whoopee cushion sandwich where the inflated cushion is placed between two persons who then push together and cause it to fart. If you stand face to face and aim the cushion just right you can get the expelled air to blow your hair around -causing fall on the floor and laugh till your sides hurt happiness.

Most interesting is the girls attempts to stealthily place the whoopee cushion upon any surface they expect an adult might sit. We alternate between mock horror when pretending to sit all unexpected on the cushion and silly dramatics upon finding it before sitting on the cushion.

Yeah it is juvenile and not really for polite company but anything that inspires that much laughter and happiness is welcome to hang out at my place.

  • @keystspf@xanga – Thank you for the suggestion. I will see if it is available in Australian stores, if not there is always the internet 🙂

  • You should look for some FLARP. They sell it at Walmart, I think. It is putty in a can and it makes some of the most fantastic fart noises EVER. My kids had a blast with it at our nice, fancy Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant in Stowe, VT. Thanks, Aunt Amy for introducing it. 🙂
